In a refreshing show of bi-partisanship, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee approved S. 1562, a bill to reauthorize the Older Americans Act. The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is included under Title V of this bill.
SCSEP is a community service and work based training program for older workers. Authorized by the Older Americans Act, the program provides subsidized, service-based training for low-income persons 55 or older who are unemployed and have poor employment prospects.
Sponsored by by Sens. Bernie Sanders (D-VT), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), and Lamar Alexander, SCSEP remains as it is under current law.

- You can view the committee meeting HERE. The committee had several items on its agenda and discussions around the Older Americans Act start around the 33:47 mark.
The next step in the process is for the full Senate to vote on this measure. Given the full schedule of the Senate over the rest of the congressional session, it is unclear when or if it will be brought to a full vote.
Update on the Reauthorization of the Workforce Investment Act
Thank you for everyone who responded to my October 21st Legislative Update regarding moving WIA in the Senate. Thanks to your efforts, 418 organizations from 45 states and Puerto Rico signed the letter.
If you would like a copy of that letter, I would be happy to send that to you. If you still would like to sign on - we can add your organization's name to future letters that we bring to Capitol Hill, so just let me know.
